Event Description

On Thursday, June 11th, Amnesty International will be teaming up with Chad Stokes, of State Radio and Dispatch, for a teach-in on Women's Human Rights. The teach-in will focus on the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA) and the work of the group Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA). It will also feature live acoustic music from Chad Stokes and a chance to win two tickets to Dispatch's sold out show at the Kennedy Center on Friday, June 12. Admission is free, but seating is limited!

Background: The International Violence Against Women Act is an unprecedented effort by the United States to address violence against women globally. One out of every three women worldwide will be physically or sexually abused during her lifetime. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights. Violence and abuse devastates the lives of millions of women, knows no national or cultural barriers, and most importantly, it must be stopped. Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) is a women's civic movement in Zimbabwe dedicated to protecting women's human rights. They strengthen female leadership in communities, encourage women to stand up for their rights and freedoms, and lobby on issues affecting women and their families. The activists of WOZA know the price of freedom. For organizing peaceful demonstrations to protest the worsening social, economic and human rights situation in Zimbabwe. WOZA members have been repeatedly harassed, intimidated, beaten and jailed by authorities. This teach-in will focus on raising awareness about the international effort to protect women's human rights and will provide actions for you to help make a difference!

at the fifth amnesty human prize award on november 16th. the hardest part was to get them to germany, because 3 days before the event, they were still in prison. in a small room (like 20 squaremeters) with 16 people, even a young child. it was really a horrible situation for them. and when the came free, for like 220.000.000 zim dollars (which was like 1,50 US Dollar), they were under house arrest, but they did find a way through the land to the victoria falls and acted like tourists and flue with a small air-company to johannesburg, where the took a flight to frankfurt, germany.
and we didn'T know that it worked, until they called "We're here".... we were really relieved!!!!!

I'll upload here speech, later... and also the speech of Delphine Djiralbe, you know her? And interesting woman, humanrightsdefender, lawyer, from the chad. her speech was so emotional!!!
